Robert Swan, OBE, is a British polar explorer and environmentalist who was born on April 17, 1955, in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. He is best known for being the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles unaided.
Swan began his career as a sailor, and he later became interested in polar exploration. In 1985, he was selected to join the British Antarctic Survey as a geophysicist, and he spent two years in Antarctica conducting research.
In 1986, Swan announced his intention to walk to the South Pole unaided, to highlight the effects of global warming on the Antarctic environment. He completed the journey in 99 days, becoming the first person to walk to the South Pole unaided in 34 years.
In 1992, Swan became the first person to walk to the North Pole unaided, completing the journey in 57 days. He also established the 2041 Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting sustainable living and combating climate change.
Swan has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to polar exploration and environmentalism, including the Polar Medal and the Royal Geographical Society's Gold Medal. He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1994.
Today, Swan continues to work as an environmentalist and motivational speaker, inspiring others to take action to protect the planet.
