About:
"I first read the Hidden Years by John Luff (ASIN: B0006CQ0FQ) in 1967 when living in Hong Kong and have read it several times since. The book tells various individual stories derived from interviewing survivors of the period. It concentrates on just before the Japanese invasion and the period leading up to the eventual surrender in 1941 after a well fought rear guard action against overwhelming odds.
==
It is not merely an historical account but, more importantly, an insight into individuals' (civilian, home defence and military) accounts of professional heroism, luck, misfortune, Japanese atrocities The Hidden Years: Hong Kong 1941-1945 , escape, POW imprisonment and what military formations took part including statistics of KIA, wounded etc. It is well written, in that it keeps the reader engaged and is thought provoking. It encouraged me to read widely on other aspects of warfare involving bad odds,eg Montecassino, Crimean War, Boxer Rebellion, Fall of Singapore and the Zulu War in 1879 to name but a few. If you can get a copy of this book, you will not be disappointed."
